Sony’s PSN account commitment triggers criticism of Helldivers 2

The latest controversy in the gaming world centres around Sony’s decision to require a PlayStation Network (PSN) account for Helldivers 2. Originally, the game did not require PSN accounts, allowing for a seamless experience for PC gamers in particular. However, three months after release, Sony announced that new players will need to link their PSN accounts from 6 May 2024, while existing players have until early June to do so.

This decision sparked a strong reaction from the gaming community. Critics argued that the retroactive introduction of this requirement was both patronising and unnecessary, especially for a cooperative PvE game. It also excluded players in over 170 countries where PSN accounts are not supported, leading to mass refunds and criticism on Steam.

Players also expressed concerns about the inconvenience and potential privacy implications of this new requirement. The controversy highlights the ongoing tensions between corporate decisions and player expectations in an increasingly connected industry.
