Hi everyone! Guess what! Gmail just turned 20 years old on Monday!
Let’s remember 1 April 2004: when Google announced Gmail, many thought it was an April Fool’s joke. Most email services at the time only offered 15 megabytes of storage space, while Gmail offered a whopping 1 gigabyte for free! You needed an invitation to sign up, which made the service super exclusive and a must-have for tech enthusiasts.
Today, Gmail is the king of email providers. Over 1.7 billion people use it — that’s about 20% of the world’s population! In the US, 45% of email users favour Gmail. Google has increased the free storage space to 15 gigabytes and added cool features like the “one-click unsubscribe” button and the “undo send” button for those “Oops!” moments.
According to PC Mag, Gmail is so integrated into our lives that we hardly think about it anymore. It’s like brushing your teeth or checking Instagram — just part of our daily routine. And it’s here to stay.
Happy birthday, Gmail! Here’s to 20 more years of organising our emails and making our lives easier.
