In 1996, Pfizer researchers selected 200 paediatric hospitals dealing with an epidemic in Nigeria for an experimental study. One hundred children were given an untested oral version of the antibiotic.

The researchers did not obtain signed consent forms, and the medical staff reported that Pfizer had not informed the parents or the children of the experimental nature of the drug.

Tragically, 11 children died, while others suffered disabilities such as deafness, muteness, paralysis, impaired vision and slurred speech.

In 2007, a Nigerian civil lawsuit was filed against Pfizer, as reported by the Washington Post. The case involved patient 6587-0069, a 10-year-old girl from Nigeria who weighed 41 pounds. On 19 April 1996, she exhibited symptoms of meningitis with spinal fluid.

Although she was listed as patient 0069 and received 56 mg of the antibiotic, her condition worsened, leading to her death. Pfizer’s records specifically noted the actions taken, but the outcome remained unchanged: Death.
