Paris metro turns passengers into green energy heroes!

The Paris Metro has found a creative way to power its trains – by harnessing the energy of commuters! Thanks to the innovative efforts of energy company IBERDROLA, six turnstiles at the Miromesnil metro station have been transformed into mini-turbines.

Last year, passengers passing through these turnstiles generated green electricity, each one producing 0.2 watts. With 27,000 passengers using the turnstiles, the potential to power the entire metro system is astonishing – enough to save 30,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions every year.

The turbines, designed by students from the Junia School of Engineering, were 3D printed and are made from biodegradable material, emphasising the commitment to sustainability.

Although the project is a step in the right direction, global renewable energy capacity must be tripled by 2030 to limit global warming. The Paris Metro initiative shows the power of innovation in tackling the climate crisis and reminds us that each of us can contribute to a greener future.”
