Excitement was in the air as crowds gathered to witness the highly anticipated screening of the year’s best short film. Eager viewers streamed into the cinema and anticipation for the film grew. But as six minutes passed, a strange realisation dawned on the audience – the screen remained static, fixed on a single scene that showed only the ceiling of a room.
By the seventh minute, with no change in sight, frustration grew among the audience. Complaints arose, some felt they had wasted their time and wanted to leave the cinema. Suddenly, the camera angle changed to show a heartbreaking sight – a woman confined to a wheelchair, paralysed from the waist down and lying helplessly in bed.
A simple message appeared on the screen: “We have only shown you 8 minutes of the scenes this disabled woman experiences every hour of her life. And yet you couldn’t even endure 8 minutes. Cherish every second of your life and your health.”
As viewers realised their own privilege, tears welled up in their eyes. In just 10 minutes, the film had impressively reminded them of the value of every moment and the difficulties faced by people with disabilities.
