Dear Yeni Yol students,

As we approach International Labour Day on May 1, it is important to take a moment to reflect on the significance of this day and what it means to all of us, including you, the future workforce.

International Workers’ Day, also known as Labour Day, is not just another holiday on the calendar. It is a day to recognise the contributions of working people in all industries and sectors. It is a reminder of the hard work and dedication required to build our society and economy.

But Labour Day is about more than just celebrating; it’s about empowering workers. It’s about ensuring that every worker, including you one day, knows their rights and is able to stand up for fair and safe working conditions.

In many countries, Labour Day is even a public holiday that highlights the value of the workforce. It is proof of how important it is that workers are treated with dignity and respect.

The origins of Labour Day can be traced back to the late 19th century labour movement in the United States, specifically to a historic event known as the Haymarket Affair. On 1 May 1886, workers gathered in Haymarket Square to demonstrate peacefully for an eight-hour day. However, the protest turned violent when a bomb was detonated, killing both police officers and demonstrators.

As you delve into the history of Labour Day, remember the sacrifices made by those who fought for workers’ rights. Their efforts paved the way for many of the workplace rights and protections we enjoy today.

So as we celebrate International Workers’ Day this year, let us not only honour the past, but also work towards a future where every worker is valued, respected and empowered.

Sincerely yours,
