The construction of Anıtkabir involved the participation of the first female engineer, Sabiha Rüfat Girayman. At the beginning of the Lion Road, Liberty and Independence Towers stand opposite you. In these towers, there are three women and three men facing each other, symbolizing gender equality with statues of equal height. As you head towards the Train Square, you climb 26 steps to reach the starting point of the Lion Road, symbolizing the significant offensive that began on August 26, 1922.
Due to the Turks being a tribe passing from the east, the Aslanlı yol is entered from the east. The 24 lions on the Aslanlı yol represent the 24 Oghuz clans. The asymmetrical paving of the Aslanlı Yol, with 5 cm gaps, is designed to encourage visitors to ascend to Atatürk’s positions with a respectful, bowed posture.
The streets around Anıtkabir, “Ordular ilk hedefiniz Akdeniz ileri!” carry names in advance. Rasattepe, where Anıtkabir was constructed, has an elevation of 907 meters and is an ancient Phrygian settlement. Atatürk’s tomb is made of a 40-ton monolithic red marble adorned with soil from various regions of Turkey beneath.
The Ceremony Brigade changes the Turkish flag, waving at Anıtkabir without being lowered.
